Five Women, Some Coffee, and a Talk Show

The latest bait from Alex and Chris Perkins takes a topic that has been around the news ever since Rosie O'Donnell's face returned to television and satirizes it, or just stating the obvious, whatever you prefer.

"Good Morning, Ladies" is about five women on a morning talk show and their journeys as one of them leaves and is replaced by someone who creates quite a stir. Okay, I'll just get to the point in saying that the bait is retelling the history of "The View" over the past year, but it is also making a great comedy out of it. The casting is exceptional in every way and completely plausible. Here are the comparisons to the real life people, but keep in mind, this is NOT A BIOPIC, IT IS A SATIRE: Blythe Danner-Barbara Walters, Megan Mulally-Rosie O'Donnell, Sigourney Weaver-Meredith Viera, Kristin Chenowith-Elizabeth Hasselbeck, Vanessa Williams-Star Jones-Reynolds, Bette Midler-Joy Behar. Any of those women could be up for best casting choice at the end of the month.

Of the main characters, I believe that Chenowith is the most likely to succeed because she has the baitiest of the roles and is a perfect fit. The final confrontation between her and Mulally's character shows off her range as a steadfast Republican defending the troops while also feeling personally betrayed by her co-panelist.

The choice of Oscar-winner Sofia Coppola as director is excellant because of her ability to capture feminine emotion and make something funny about it. The bait, overall, is extremely accurate in its portrayal of the actual events and deserves much acclaim.

"Good Morning, Ladies" is a contender in the following categories in the main competition:

Best Director-Sofia Coppola

Best Original Screenplay

Best Actress-Megan Mulally

Best Supporting Actress-Kristin Chenowith, Bette Midler, Sigourney Weaver, Vanessa Williams

We Should All Go To "Rehab!"

Coming on the heels of constant reports about celebrities entering rehab is a bait about just that. "Rehab!: A Contemporary Musical" from baiters Zgamer and Ryan provides a great deal of laughs, some hilarious song-and-dance numbers, and just a little bit of social satire.

"Rehab!" is about a young man named Caleb, played brilliantly by teen heartthrob Drake Bell, who moves into The Cleanse and Go Rehab Center in Fairview, Nevada, just because he doesn't want to pay for anything for himself. At the facility, Caleb encounters numerous quirky and eccentric individuals that provide the bait's humorous core. His love interest, Susan, is played by Lindsay Lohan (right) in the role she was born to play (or already has, hehe) as a depressed teen who turned to drugs to deal with her gay parents. Caleb soon learns that the celebrities in the facility aren't nearly as bad as the people working there, which include Tim Curry and Broadway veterans John Tartaglia and Stephanie D'Abbruzzo. Ranging from speed addicts to name droppers, the employees at The Cleanse and Go provide the most entertaining part of the musical.

The bait, while being a musical from the Tony-winning team behind the laughfest "Avenue Q" and Jason Reitman, presents numerous questions about the role of rehab in today's Hollywood society. From pop idols on cocaine to TV stars using words that would be heard at any schoolyard, rehab has become a joke in American society and the authors of this bait are well aware and are trying to present the topic as a problem.

I think this bait will be very well received and is a strong possibility for Best Picture-Musical/Comedy at the Golden Globes. Expect the supporting cast to pop up throughout the month and also expect the bait to garner a great deal of attention at the final awards.

"Rehab!: A Contemporary Musical" is a contender in the following categories for the main contest:

Best Picture

Best Director-Jason Moore

Best Original Screenplay

Best Actor-Drake Bell

Best Actress-Lindsay Lohan

Best Supporting Actor-Tim Curry, John Tartaglia

Best Supporting Actress-Stephanie D'Abbruzzo

Reactions after GG's and SAG's

Well, all the precursors are done and we just have to wait for the official competition. Here are some of my thoughts on them.

Golden Globes:
Best Picture Drama- Oil
Not a huge surprise here but I'm a little disappointed. I feel "Lucky Clover" should've won but oh well. I have a feeling this may end up being a "Babel" situation and either "Clover" or "The Informer" taking the top prize

Best Actor Drama- Topher Grace for Gray Daze
Saw this coming since the beginning of the month. This and his SAG win should solidify his Oscar.

Best Actress Drama- Glenn Close for The Last Page
Hooray! I've been rooting for her since the beginning because her role is so baity, therefore making her more worthy for the contest.

Best Picture Comedy/Musical- Mom Is 80
I didn't win...but that's not shocking. "Mom Is 80" is a very worthy bait with a great cast and story.

Best Actor Comedy/Musical- Kevin Spacey for Behind the show
They guy I though should've won did over Jim Carrey, who I thought would be the frontrunner in the Lead Actor category. The bait itself isn't much to talk about but Spacey's character had so much meat in it.

Best Actress Comedy/Musical- Bea Arthur for Mom Is 80
I'm so happy Renee Zellweger didn't win (sorry to the author). I don't think Bea Arthur should've won either but it will suffice.

Best Supporting Actor- Christopher Plummer for Oil
I predicted it but he probably won't win the Oscar

Best Supporting Actress- Julliette Lewis for Clockwork
I really didn't know what to make of this category because it's been the most uneven throughout the contest. An example could be from my October bait "Live from New York" where Amy Sedaris garnered a lot of attention at the GG's and on the forums but wasn't even nominated for the Oscar. She went on to win Best Supporting Actress of the year, but that's beside the point.

Best Director- James Mangold for The 27th Victim
Okay...I really don't have anything to say about this.

Best Screenplay- Charlie Kaufman for Glitz
I was really surprised to see this didn't go to "Mom Is 80" but I guess this bait had to win somewhere.

SAG:
Best Ensemble-Oil
This award should have gone to the best reviewed bait of the month, "The Informer", but "Oil" prevails again. While I don't think the bait will be crowned bait of the month, I think James Somerton may be up for Best Author.

Best Actor-Topher Grace-Gray Daze
And the statues keep coming...

Best Actress-Glenn Close-The Last Page
and coming...

Best Supporting Actor-Christopher Plummer-Oil
and coming...

Best Supporting Actress-Juliette Lewis-Clockwork
and coming.

SAG Nominations are up

I've never really considered the SAGs to be a good precursor of the official awards but I'll give it a try anyway. I continue to be amazed by the attention "Glitz" is getting and I thank everyone who voted for Philip Seymour Hoffman for my bait "Captain Fantastic".

The Joker

Here is the picture of Heath Ledger as The Joker in 2008's "The Dark Knight"

Will "Border Man" Win Best Bait of July 2007?

"Border Man" is directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and written by Guillermo Arriaga. It stars Tom Berenger as Dennis, a New Mexico Border Patrol official who suffers from nightmares about his death. He is also leading an investigation against a drug trafficker who moves heroin through illegal immigrants. One day he finds a drug runner (Maribal Verdu) and immediately falls for her. He takes the Mexican woman into hiding and begins a secret love affair while the drug lord wants his girl back and Dennis's alcoholic partner begins to suspect his best friend of something rotten. What transpires is shocking, heartbreaking, and ultimately tragic.

FYC: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor-Tom Berenger, Best Supporting Actor-William Petersen, Best Supporting Actress-Maribel Verdu, Best Original Screenplay.

"Other World" Bait of the Month July 2007?

I seem to be in a hyper-blogging mood today so I'm gonna put out a puff-piece for one of my baits for July.

"Other World" is written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan and stars Joaquin Phoenix (right) as a Philadelphia lawyer who dies in a car crash and is given another chance by a man (Ron Rifkin) to live his life again in another dimension to make things right with the things he screwed up before he died.

Phoenix's character is forced to adapt to his new life, which is drastically different from his previous and endure pains that he has never experienced. It is a heartwrenching drama in the vein of "The Sixth Sense" and hopefully it will garner enough awards attention in next month's contest.

FYC: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor-Joaquin Phoenix, Best Supporting Actor-Ron Rifkin, Best Supporting Actor-Freddy Rodriguez, Best Supporting Actress-Mena Suvari, Best Original Screenplay

"The Dark Knight" FYC 2008

I know it's a little early to be talking about this, but I want "The Dark Knight" to win Best Picture 2008! "Batman Begins" was such a good movie and deserved more awards attention than it got. The new Batsuit (left) looks awesome, as do the new Batpod and Batmobile. I don't really know what the plot of the movie is yet but I don't really care because that image of the Joker's face that was floating around a couple weeks ago was truly terrifying. Heath Ledger promises to bring a new, even more sinister side of the classic villain and the replacement of Katie Holmes with Maggie Gyllenhaal was a very good marketing ploy. Aaron Eckhardt should excell in pre-Two Face form and I'm excited to see the return of Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, and Morgan Freeman. I'm also interested to see where Anthony Michael Hall's character is going to be taken. I think they may be setting him up to be The Riddler for the third movie, which would be so cool considering Jim Carrey's version completely changed the character. There are also rumors that Philip Seymour Hoffman will also be in the third movie as the Penquin. Well, I guess this changed from an FYC article to an "I-can't-wait-for-this" piece, but oh well.

Thoughts after the Golden Globes

For the past couple of months I've had a hard time using the Golden Globes and SAGs as a good precursor for the contest. There were a couple surprises this month like Golden Igloo winner "Gray Daze" failing to score a BP nom. It doesn't really surprise me because I felt it was mainly a Grace vehicle. I continue to be surprised by the support for "Glitz" and I was somewhat shocked that "Oil" got as many noms as it did. I was disappointed to see that "Standardized Text" didn't make the cut in the Musical/Comedy category, I felt that was one of the strongest baits of the month, but people didn't like it because of the casting choices. I was kinda surprised that Alec Baldwin got nommed again for a spot that should've gone to Greg Kinnear. Here are my predictions (and yes I factored my bait into it, it would just be stupid not to):

Best Picture (Drama)
Rooting For: Lucky Clover
Should Win: Lucky Clover
Will Win: Lucky Clover

Best Actor (Drama)
Rooting For: Javier Bardem-The Informer
Should Win: George Clooney-Oil

Notes on the Bait an Oscar contest

I previously published this on the forum of theoscarigloo.com's Bait an Oscar contest forum, but it appears Johnny has deleted that thread due to numerous arguments that seemed to start after I posted this same opinion (so sorry about that Johnny if I was a catalyst). I'm going to try to recollect what I had previously written with hopes to spark a change within the contestants.

The baits of May and June have been somewhat of a disappointment to me for several reasons, but mostly because the baits aren't as baity as they once were. It got so bad last month that I didn't even vote (I'll admit I did have computer troubles but I could have gotten to another, but I just did not have the motivation to vote). I'm constantly disappointed by the baits that receive tons of attention and are well-written, but have little or no baitiness, which was the basis of the contest. I would like to get back to the time when romantic epics like "The Wall" or great biopics like "The Great Fitzgerald" or "The World's Longest Suicide". Even my winning bait "Photograph" feels drastically different from the baits being released now. Some are making a mockery (Holy Cow 3(00)...I actually thought the first was funny and creative but now its just annoying) and others are beginning to delve into non-Oscar friendly territories (the After Dark series). I hope this post inspires readers to come up with something that would actually win an Oscar and not just some ensemble drama (I realize this is a popular genre to use and I know I have on several occasions, but when it was hip) or a suicide or gay drama. Get creative! Think of something that hasn't been done before.

Another change is also occuring in the contest, but this is a good one! After months and months of complaining by me and other contestants, the baits are finally getting shorter! I guess it takes threats from Johnny for some people to realize their faults, LOL. Keep 'em short, please.

June 2007 Reviews

Sorry if I came off as being arrogant or angry but I do not feel the baits this month are up to par compared to past months.

The 27th Victim- Very well written although not that baity B
8- Not baity at all and would be better as a documentary D
The Beast Within You- Too long and hard to imagine C-
Behind The Show- I don't see any awards beyong Spacey's role B-
Bloodshed- A mix of Platoon and Bobby, but missing structural integrity B
Clockwork- I didn't like it at all C-
Cooking Class- Too much like a Lifetime movie and I'm kinda getting sick of the ensemble dramas, they went out about 6 months ago C-
Dark Night Of The Soul- This movie would never be made and if it did, most people wouldn't even be able to watch it D
David Copperfield: I Am Dead- Not a big fan of the title or book but seems pretty good, Julie Christie is a good choice B+
Elm Falls- Waaaaaaaay too long and I lost interest C-
The End Of The Alphabet- Heartwarming and well done A-
Flint- Too much like the whole Hannibal storyline but okay B-
Glitz- Too long, lost interest C-
Gray Daze- Very well written although I think it would mostly a performance piece for Grace B+
Holy Cow 3(00)!- Just...no F
How Things Change- Started out good but the whole imagination thing drew me away B
The Informer- Okay, not amazing, but better than a lot of baits this month C+
It's A Public Life- Quirky and good B
The Last Page- Mostly a piece for Close B
Lucky Clover- I really liked it A
Mindset- I didn't get the ending C
Mom Is 80- Some errors in the plot, but sounds fun B
Oil- Very relevant although would work better with Ethanol B
One Thousand Paper Crimes- Too long D
Pillow/Menu- I didn't see a plot D
Running Miles- Good sports story B-
Song And Dance Man- A complete rip-off of a Scrubs episode but not too bad B
Standardized Text- Very funny and well done A-
Tuesdays With Morrie- Boo hoo Morrie dies, sorry but I hate this story B-

Welcome to Pat's Deep Thoughts

Hello everyone,

Due to the recent surge of Bait an Oscar blogs, I have decided to succumb to popular decisions and create my own blog devoted to the Bait an Oscar contest and the Oscar Race in general. I will be posting my reviews for the June Baits, my Big 8, an opinion about the contest, my June predictions for the real Oscar race, and my current Oscar faves.
